The Red Graves

The Red Graves stands completed within the sacred glade at The Lament, marking the resting place of eight citizens of Valdraeth who fell to the horrors of the Red Caps. What was once a proposed sanctuary is now a living memorial, quiet in voice, but absolute in intent.
The site has been shaped as a wooded grove, carefully guided rather than forced, allowing native trees and flowering growth to define the space. The result is a natural sanctuary that feels less constructed than revealed, where canopy and undergrowth form a protective hush over the ground below. Within the grove, eight gravestones rise from the earth, each carved from deep redwood and set with deliberate care into the soil. They are not arranged as spectacle, but as presence, each one marking a life lost, each one anchored in place as both remembrance and warning.
Each grave bears the name and memory of one of the fallen:
Pedyr Greensward — noble leader of the scouting party, older in years but still powerful in stride and spirit, his greying hair and steadfast presence guiding those beside him.
Nesta Ferch Rhonwen — second to Pedyr, younger and quicker of step, forever matching pace with the mentor they followed so closely.
Dystan the Hawke — sharp-eyed and restless, ever searching the paths ahead for danger or safe passage alike.
Orla Silvertongue — whose laughter and stories brought warmth even to the coldest campfires beneath darkened skies.
Meabh fitz Pedyr Most-Beloved — bearing Pedyr’s features and easy smile alike, remembered for bright eyes that carried hope through hardship.
Kaiden Heartsease — healer and caretaker of the group, carrying herbs, bandages, and steady hands wherever the wounded needed them.
Aurelius MacLachlan — who paused amongst fear and ruin alike to gather flowers growing within The Lament, intending to bring small beauty back to Haven.
Daithi Laterunner — vigilant rearguard and silent protector, forever watching the path behind to keep their companions safe.
Embedded within every gravestone is a sealed scroll case containing the results of individual fable-weaving performed for each of the dead. Their stories are preserved not as simple epitaphs, but as living memory recorded in truth, grief, and warning. These accounts remain protected within the grove so that generations to come may know not only their names, but who they were.
The grove itself remains intentionally modest. Built from local materials and maintained with restrained care, it is not a place for grand procession or ceremony. Instead, it invites solitary visits, whispered names beneath the trees, and quiet reflection carried beneath leaf and shadow. It is a place where grief is not displayed, but held.
At its centre, the site has been formally dedicated to The Reaper, acknowledging both the passage of the dead and the necessity of remembrance. This dedication serves not only to honour those lost, but to bind their memory as a ward against repetition, ensuring that what once hunted here is remembered, resisted, and never allowed to fade quietly into myth. Now complete, The Red Graves stands as a place where memory is cultivated like root and bark, and where forgetting is no longer permitted to grow.
