Looming from the steep craggy hills on the eastern reaches of the Braeleven Valley near The Wilds, Varnach’s Sable Vigil is a monument of black stone, shaped into the chilling visage of a coiled serpent poised to strike. Standing thrice the height of the average traveller passing by, its position upon the hilltop gives it a commanding view across the misty-laden horizon cast into shadow by its form, watching ever onwards for threats of corruption and common banditry alike through a gaze of crystalline red.

Dedicated to Varnarch the Viper, founder of the storied House Varnach who to this day claim proclaim him a fearsome but forgotten Valdrae hero from during the Avereaux-Valdraeth wars in the Age of Legend, the Vigil serves both as a tribute to his story, and a proclaimed promise from those that from him claim descent. Be they friends or foes of the House, any that travel nearby can scarcely miss the Vigil’s form, for even when the mists lie heavy across the valley, the faint glint of its carved eyes pierce through, declaring resolutely that the Varnachs are always lying in wait, just out of sight, watching vigilantly for those that would take from them and those that they lead, ward and guard.

Furthermore, at the monument’s base nestled within the wound coils of the serpent’s form lies a small alcove dedicated to The Shadow. Completely hidden from those passing by, local smallfolk and wanderers alike can offer up promises, confessions and other words in shaded seclusion, knowing that anything offered there will be known only to the God of Mysteries and Secrets. House Varnach has long maintained a deep faith to the Shadow, and with the Vigil’s construction, this devotion has led to their dead being interred within the Vigil’s proximity, Gareth Varnach being the first of such after falling to the denizens of the infamous Hedge alongside many of his countryfellows.
